Asylee Orientations
An individual may be granted asylum by the Asylum Division of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or, in immigration court by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).
An asylee is a person who has fled his or her country and is unable or unwilling to return due to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a social group.
This asylee orientation is for persons with granted (approved) asylum status. The orientation offers individuals an opportunity to learn about programs, services, and resources newly available to them. Some benefits and services are time sensitive, beginning on the date you are granted asylum.
The orientation focuses on benefits and services in California/ Los Angeles. However, some information and resources apply to persons with asylum throughout the United States. The orientation is free of cost and confidential for attendees.
We will cover several topics for new asylees including how to navigate social services, educational resources, and information on:
- Important documents
- Nutritional and food programs
